Building a kitchen - of course you can do it on your own!

The majority of people who buy a new kitchen in flat packages choose to have a carpenter assemble the kitchen. However, if you are a little handy and have patience, you can build the kitchen yourself. The important thing is to avoid the classic mistakes.

You can complete the kitchen installation with a few tips and tricks

Have you decided to build a new kitchen or renovate your kitchen on your own? Assembling a kitchen requires skill and patience. The majority of all who choose tobuy a new kitchen turns to a carpenter who can take care of the kitchen assembly. If you are a handy person who has patience, it is fine to assemble yourself. However, there are some aspects to consider in advance. And we help you with that - important things to consider when building a kitchen step by step.

Building a kitchen step by step - Consider this!

Before the purchase of the kitchen

It is extremely important that you start by measuring your kitchen carefully so that you know that all the sections and fittings alongside the cabinets will fit.

Before the assembly of the kitchen

- Store worktops, doors and sides flat on the floor.
- Carefully read the installation guide and then follow it step by step.
- Check with a spirit level that the walls and floor are level.

During the kitchen installation

- Use a wall strip when assembling the cabinets. It is set up using a spirit level and ensures that the cabinets have something to rest on before being screwed to the wall. In the case of upper cabinets, the wall strip is removed after assembly.
- All upper and lower cabinets are equipped with a transverse support bar in the upper part of the back. It is through it that you screw the cabinet to the wall.
- Cabinets with a width of at least 80–100 cm should, in addition to one screw on each side, also have one in the middle section.
- Choose the appropriate screw and plug depending on the wall material.
- Use screw clamps when you set up cabinets next to each other. But put a small piece of wood under the clamps so you don't scratch the cabinets.
- Check the plumb and level when the cabinets have been fitted together, before it is time to screw them together with special mounting screws.
- Don't forget the fitting pieces if the cabinet is placed against a wall to be able to open the doors at least 90 degrees.

Lighting and electricity - always hire an electrician

- Always hire a certified electrician to install new electrical outlets and run electrical cables.
- The same applies if you are going to install lighting and the voltage is above 12 volts.
- The trend is towards having LED spotlights in the kitchen and decorative lighting also in drawers and under plinths.

Don't forget this when building a kitchen!

All water and gas connections, like electrical and white goods installations, must be carried out by qualified professionals.

Kitchen assembly

Time to assemble a medium-sized kitchen means a work effort of 30-40 hours. How long it takes for an inexperienced person is impossible to say. For an inexperienced person it is difficult to say, therefore it is important to have extra time and not to stress.

1. Be careful
The first is accuracy. Make sure to read the assembly guide that comes with it in good time so you also know which tools will be needed to assemble your dream kitchen.

- It is essential to work calmly and methodically. Then you can handle it as long as you are only normal-handed.
2. Invest in good tools
Don't buy cheap tools and invest in quality - it always pays off in the long run. The result of buying and building a new kitchen is something you want to be satisfied with and avoid measures.

- A big mistake that can be seen in kitchen renovations is forgetting the spirit level. You want to make sure that the cabinets end up level. If you neglect the spirit level, the consequences of problems usually arise, for example putting in a dishwasher.
3. Install the bench cabinets first
The 20-year-experienced carpenter Jerry Andersson almost always starts by assembling the bench cabinets and only then takes on the wall cabinets. He says that it's not like in the old days when the upper cabinets were full-covering and could only be bolted to the wall, then you always took them first. Now they are usually more pretty and need to be centered according to eye measurements based on the worktop.
4. Hide the screw heads
Jerry feels that it is common to use too many screws, which is not pleasing to the eye. The carpenter usually tries to hide the screw heads. You can always find places where they are not as clearly visible, for example behind a hinge.
5. Cut decorative and crown moldings with care
The aesthetic can be a challenge even for professional carpenters. When Jerry is asked what is the smartest thing about assembling a kitchen, it is, among other things, all the decorative and crown moldings that must be put up against the ceiling and sides. It is necessary to cut them neatly with the miter saw.

Essential tools when building a kitchen according to Jerry

- Spirit level
- Screwdriver
- Jigsaw
- Cutting and miter saw
